A technical SEO audit should do more than produce a long list of warnings. Its real job is to find the issues that limit discovery, slow down users or dilute the signals search engines rely on—and then turn those findings into a sensible order of work.
This checklist covers the areas I look at first when a website needs stronger organic visibility. You can use it as a practical framework whether you manage a small service site, an ecommerce store or a growing content platform.
1. Make sure the right pages can be crawled
Start with the foundations. Search engines need a clear route to every page that matters, while low-value or private areas should stay out of the index. Review your robots.txt rules, navigation, XML sitemap and internal links together rather than treating each one in isolation.
- Confirm important pages are not blocked by robots.txt.
- Look for orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them.
- Remove redirected, broken or non-canonical URLs from the XML sitemap.
- Check that important content is reachable within a few useful clicks.
2. Control what search engines index
Crawlability and indexability are different. A page can be available to crawlers without belonging in search results. Parameter URLs, internal search results, duplicate category paths and thin utility pages can all consume attention that should go to stronger content.
Use canonical tags, redirects and noindex directives deliberately. Every indexable URL should have a clear purpose, a unique primary topic and enough value to deserve its place in search.
3. Resolve status-code and redirect problems
Broken internal links interrupt users and waste crawl activity. Redirect chains add delay and make site migrations harder to reason about. Crawl the website and group issues by impact: internal 404 links, redirect chains, redirect loops and soft 404 pages should all have a named owner and a clear fix.
The best audit is not the one with the most rows. It is the one that makes the next decision obvious.
4. Give every page one clear canonical URL
HTTP and HTTPS, www and non-www, trailing slashes, mixed letter case and tracking parameters can create several routes to effectively the same content. Pick a consistent format, redirect alternatives and make sure canonical tags, internal links and sitemap URLs all reinforce it.
Self-referencing canonicals are useful on most indexable pages, but they should never be used to hide an inconsistent internal linking system.
5. Improve Core Web Vitals in context
Performance work should be based on real templates and real user journeys. Lab tests are useful for diagnosis, while field data shows what visitors actually experience. Focus on the largest recurring causes of poor Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
- Optimise and correctly size the main image or content element.
- Reduce render-blocking CSS and unnecessary third-party scripts.
- Reserve space for images, embeds, banners and dynamic components.
- Break up long main-thread tasks and keep interactions lightweight.
6. Strengthen titles, headings and page intent
Technical health cannot compensate for unclear intent. Each key page needs a descriptive title, one meaningful H1 and supporting sections that answer the next questions a visitor is likely to have. Avoid writing for arbitrary keyword density; write so the subject and purpose are unmistakable.
When several pages target the same intent, decide whether they should be consolidated, differentiated or repositioned. Cannibalisation is usually an information architecture problem before it is a copy problem.
7. Use internal links to show priority and relationships
Internal links help people explore and help search engines understand hierarchy. Link from authoritative, relevant pages to the pages you want to grow. Use anchor text that describes the destination and make sure important links are present in the rendered HTML.
A good internal linking review often reveals wider structural problems: isolated service pages, old articles that still attract links, or category pages that do not help users choose their next step.
8. Validate structured data
Structured data should accurately describe what is visible on the page. Validate the syntax, then check the meaning. Organisation, BreadcrumbList, Article, Product and LocalBusiness markup can be useful when they match the content and meet current search-engine guidelines.
Do not treat schema as a shortcut to rankings. It is a layer of clarity, not a substitute for a strong page.
9. Check mobile rendering and accessibility
Search engines primarily evaluate the mobile version of a website, and visitors expect the same information and functionality on every screen. Compare mobile and desktop output, test navigation with a keyboard and check that headings, labels, contrast and focus states create a coherent experience.
Accessibility improvements often strengthen SEO indirectly by improving structure, usability and content clarity.
10. Protect migration and redesign work
Many serious SEO losses happen during otherwise successful redesigns. Before a launch, capture existing URLs, rankings, traffic, backlinks and indexation. Map redirects at URL level, preserve valuable content and metadata, and test the staging site without allowing it into the public index.
After launch, monitor logs, Search Console, analytics and key templates closely. Fast detection turns a potential traffic loss into a small correction.
11. Measure outcomes, not just errors
An audit is complete only when it connects technical work to an outcome. Establish a baseline for organic landing-page sessions, conversions, indexed pages, crawl patterns, rankings and performance. Then annotate meaningful releases and review the direction of travel.
A shrinking error count is encouraging, but qualified leads, sales and useful visibility are the measures that matter.
12. Prioritise the work
Score each recommendation against likely impact, confidence and effort. Fix issues that affect many valuable pages before polishing isolated edge cases. Dependencies matter too: there is little value rewriting titles for URLs that will soon be consolidated or replaced.
- Critical: blocks discovery, indexation or revenue.
- High: affects an important template or a large group of pages.
- Medium: improves quality but is not limiting growth today.
- Low: a useful refinement once higher-value work is complete.
